Description
Making up a small portion of the collection are scattered papers of the League of Women Voters of the National Capital Area, of the League of Women Voters of Virginia, and the League of Women Voters of the United States. The records give a good overview of the most important governmental and social issues of Arlington, Virginia, and the United States in the post-World War II era. Types of material include annual reports, bylaws, minutes, membership and financial records, correspondence, committee reports, subject studies, voter guides, candidate questionnaires, bulletins, newspaper clippings, photographs, and videos.
Biographical or Historical Data
The League of Women Voters of the United States formed in 1920 in order to foster education in citizenship and to support improved legislation, but the organization is allied with no political party. The Arlington-Alexandria League was provisionally founded in 1944 and divided into two separate branches in 1947. An important emphasis has been voter information services and the production of studies on local and state issues. As reflected in the Arlington records, subjects studied have been schools (including integration and financing), voting rights, use and conservation of natural resources, housing, transportation, public health, public welfare, and women's rights. The National Captial Area also took an interest in these topics.
