Description
This material relates primarily to the history and programs of the Arlington Coalition for Optimum Growth (Co-Opt)
Biographical or Historical Data
The Coalition for Optimum Growth, Co-Opt, was formed in 1971 as a response from Arlington residents who disliked the rapid and seemingly uncontrollable growth of Rosslyn and Crystal City in the late 1960s. These citizens also grew concerned when they noted that the County had begun to revise the master land use plan and the early proposals called for a sizeble increase in Arlington's population. As a volunteer organization Co-Opt primarily worked behind the scenes in a support capacity. Activities included: workshops, the production of a newsletter, serving as a clearinghouse of information for other organizations, serving as expert witnesses when testifying before county boards and planning commissions, and promoting the benefits of controlled growth with radio and television shows, parades, and brochures.
