Description
The Washington & Old Dominion Railroad was founded as a means of connecting the Port of Alexandria to the growing markets of the Ohio River Valley and was meant to be a direct competitor to the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad. However, lack of funding and war would prevent this line from becoming a major railroad. Despite this, the little W&OD Railroad would serve the communities that sprang up along its route for over 100 years. From the Civil War to the era of Civil Rights, the W&OD Railroad would survive through armed conflict, depressions and recessiosn, and the constant threat of bankruptcy before it was finally abandoned and its tracks torn up in 1968. However, the railroad still lives on as the ever-popular W&OD Railroad Trail Regional Park.
