Biographical or Historical Data
President Eisenhower originally organized the Sister City Exchange Program in 1956 as a way to bridge cultural differences. The program came to Arlington County in 1994 when the County Board voted to enter into a sister city relationship with Aachen Germany. Following this vote, the Board appointed Sister City Advisory Commission disbanded and was replaced by the Sister City Association. Because of the success with Aachen, the Board decided to pursue a sister city relationship with another city. In 1995, the Board chose Coyoacan, Mexico. Coyoacan was an attractive choice for many reasons. Coyoacan is a University town with an historic business district, wonderful cultural attractions, political stability, access to transportation, and a communication system.
