Although orginally cataloged by The Library of Congress as juvenile fiction literature, ACPL decided for the following reasons to locate this work in the juvenile non-fiction collection: Quoted from author's note (last page) - "The historical truths of this story come from the books noted in the bibliograpy, from others too numerous to list, and from my consultations with the scholars also noted here. In the course of my research I met with Benedictine monks from the monasteries in Pomposa and Arezzo; I touched the walls of the medieval campanile in Pomposa and walked on the remaining stones from Guido's Cathedral of San Donato in Arezzo. I studied works of art from Guido's time in Italy and elsewhere. I held Guido's 'autografo' in my own hands..."
