Description
Here is Virginia found, unforgettably, by a family of five. One June, Guy Friddell, his wife, and sons began at Jamestown with a highway map and a commission from the Virginia State Chamber of Commerce. "Let it be," suggested Richard S. Gillis, the Chamber's executive director, "a happening, all across Virginia." It was a trip -- in teenage lingo -- that encompassed many trips: the first one to Jamestown in 1607, then the coursing of the colonists up the broad, arterial rivers and veined creeks to the great plantations, the long journey of the American Revolution that ended in sunlight at Yorktown, the somber procession to Appomattox, the triumphant tramp of pioneers along the Wilderness Trail to Cumberland Gap. Along the way are the pilgrims -- John Smith, Powhatan, George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Patrick Henry, James Madison, Robert E. Lee, Winfield Scott, Woodrow Wilson, down to the Governors of this century -- and side excursions into Virginia's fine foods, sweet talk, tall tales, lovely land, old customs, and new ideas. -- from book jacket.
