Description
The slave Phillis Wheatley in 1773 became the first person of African descent to publish a book of poems in the English language. A short twelve years previously, she arrived on a slave ship in Boston not able to speak a word of English. This work focuses on her encounters with the founding fathers especially Thomas Jefferson.
