Confederate Guerrillas, based in the part of Virginia shown here, crossed into Maryland to operate against Federal forces. John Wilkes Booth and his associates planned to take President Lincoln to Richmond through this area after they had kidnapped him. Confederates laid mines in the Potomac between Potomac Creek and Chotank Creek to protect the kidanp escape route.
