RG 71 is divided into two series. Series 1, Research Files, is further divided into three subseries: History of Arlington County, Other Arlington Place Names and Miscellaneous Research Files. Series 2, Administrative Files, is arranged alphabetically according to folder title.

RG 71 reflects Warren Clardy's research for an article he wrote in October 2001 for the Arlington Historical Magazine, which delved into the origins of Arlington County's name. The collection is primarily made up of textual materials, with notes, correspondence, clippings and book articles. Most of Clardy's research took place between 1980 and 2001, but his files contain items dating as early as 1900.

Warren Davenport Clardy was a long-time resident of Arlington County. He worked with the county government serving the senior community through committees and a job development program. Clardy was also very active in the Committee of 100, the Arlington Historical Society and the Arlington-East Falls Church Civic Association. He died in Concord, New Hampshire, in 2002.
