Description
RG 39 is primarily comprised of reports from different divisions within Metro. Although not a complete set of reports, they do represent a sampling of the type of report produced during the late 1970s and early 1980s. Also included in the collection is a series with numerous and random documents discussing metro rail and bus services for the 1960s through the 1980s. Finally, the collection has an almost complete run of the newsletter Metro Memo for 1968 through 1987 and its predecessor the Northern Virginia Transportation Commission Newsletter for 1965 through 1971.
Biographical or Historical Data
The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA or METRO) ".. . was established in 1967 to provide for the planning, financing, construction, operation, and maintenance of a rapid transit system for the Washington Metropolitan area." In 1970, bus service was added to this mission. The rail service began construction in 1969, Metro acquired four private bus companies in 1973, and passenger service for the rail transit began in 1976. The governing body of Metro is an interstate compact agency created by an agreement among Maryland, Virginia, and the District of Columbia. Metro has a Board of Directors made up of two mambers and two alternates from each participating jurisdiction. The Board of Directors makes policy decisions including issues such as fare prices and services.
