Notes

General Note
By lower Virginia peninsula is meant "that part of Virginia lying between the James and York rivers and extending from Jamestown and Williamsburg to Fortress Monroe, which is the portion occupied by the first English settlers in America ... Most of the half tones used in illustration are loaned by the "Southern workman," of Hampton, Virginia, in which magazine these sketches first appeared."--Pref.
