Not quite a masterpiece like his earlier The Bicycle Thief, Vittorio De Sica's similarly neorealist work about a cash-strapped but proud pensioner faced with eviction still earns its classic status. Except for a paternalistic relationship with a naive but pretty servant, the retired gentleman's only real source of companionship is his beloved dog-leading to several poignant scenes, including the memorable finale.
