Alexandria County was formed in 1789 from Fairfax County. In 1801 the county became part of District of Columbia. The area was returned to Virginia in 1846. In 1920 the county's name was changed to Arlington County.
The Circuit Superior Court of Law and Chancery was established in 1831. In 1851 it was replaced by the Circuit Court.
