Booklist Review

In the distance, the sun rises over river, wood, and meadow as a little boy and his dad leave home and set out for the day. In a nearby tree, a small raccoon and his father curl up to sleep. Each of the next 12 double-page spreads features a little animal and its father enjoying Just-Daddy-and-me hugs. Little Turtle loves drippy hugs. Little Bear loves furry ones. Little Chipmunk loves fuzzy hugs. As the sun goes down, the raccoons awaken and, in the nearby house, the little boy cuddles up to his dad for a good-night hug. The gentle watercolor-and-pencil artwork offers welcome glimpses of animals in their habitats, while an appended section names the animals pictured in each illustration and challenges children to find them. Similar in concept to Tafuri's All Kinds of Kisses (2012), this volume will appeal to young children with its large-scale illustrations, simple text, and repeated refrain.--Phelan, Carolyn Copyright 2015 Booklist

School Library Journal Review

PreS-Gr 1-Tafuri's beautiful watercolor and pencil illustration depict a a woodland landscape surrounding a human family's cabin. Each spread teems with life while focusing on a central father animal and its young. Animals noises (Rurrr-rurr-rurrr!) are matched with a repeated couplet: `"I love furry hugs,' says Little Bear. `Just-Daddy-and-me hugs."' The adjective describing each hug changes to highlight the animal duo. Painted turtles, beavers, skunks, foxes, chipmunks, bobwhites, hares, owls, raccoons, and woodpeckers are among the creatures introduced. Each page has much to examine, including a visual clue as to the upcoming animal family. The final page identifies the central animals, including Latin names, and the small creatures hidden among the scenes. This will be a good choice for reading aloud to a group or even examining close up one-on-one. VERDICT Daddies and little ones alike will enjoy a nice snuggle while reading this book together before bed.-Laura Hunter, Mount Laurel Library, NJ (c) Copyright 2015.
