Professor Karen Pelletier makes her sixth appearance in Dobson's latest academic mystery. Pelletier is a suspect in the murder of a rival colleague, one who was being championed for tenure in the English department of Enfield College—a slot Pelletier thought was hers. Initially, Pelletier indulges in a bit of self-pity but quickly gets into the thick of things as she hunts down the murderer. Adding interest to the mystery are insider details about academic life and Pelletier's concerns over her lover, who is serving in Iraq, and her daughter, who is in Nepal. Williams portrays Pelletier as quick talking and sharp voiced, a smart, modern woman. Other character voices are not as strongly delineated, but subtle tonal shifts indicate changes. Williams keeps the pace brisk, nicely managing the rhythm of the plot, speeding up when Pelletier is agitated and slowing down to allow listeners to savor the author's trademark skewers at academia.
