These England-based police procedurals revolve around complicated female detective inspectors; Vera Stanhope is rather abrasive, Scott and Baily are more likable. Both adapted for television, these fast-paced series are atmospheric, compelling, and dramatic, offering intricate plots and plenty of suspense. -- Mike Nilsson
The flawed, sometimes difficult women who star in these atmospheric police procedurals provoke both frustration and loyalty in their colleagues. They're set in cold, often bleak locations: Norway (Hanne Wilhemsen), where politics often intrudes, and the U.K. (Vera Stanhope). -- Shauna Griffin
Complex, flawed female detectives juggle personal challenges as well as difficult murder cases in these atmospheric police procedurals set in England (Stanhope) and Scotland (Morrow). Although Stanhope is moody in tone, the Morrow novels are bleaker and more disturbing. -- Kim Burton
Bay Tanner and Vera Stanhope are smart, resourceful, flawed women who uncover secrets and mysteries in a way no one else can in these rich mystery series. Both series offer a strong sense of place and compelling storylines. -- Halle Carlson
While Vera Stanhope is a detective inspector and Ruth Galloway a forensic archaeologist who assists the police, both are complex, flawed, women who speak their mind in these atmospheric, character-driven mystery series set on the eastern coast of England. -- Jane Jorgenson
These suspenseful, character-driven, and atmospheric mysteries star middle-aged female detective inspectors investigating murders and uncovering secrets in small English towns. Vera Stanhope is set in Northumberland while Elise King takes place in fictional Ebbing. -- Andrienne Cruz
Though Inaya Rahman's cases are grittier than Vera Stanhope's, readers looking for a tough, complex woman detective who fearlessly takes on a variety of cases will find their heroine in these police procedural series. -- Stephen Ashley
With an intriguing atmosphere and plenty of compelling detail, these engaging police procedural series both focus on complex detectives with unique backstories and perspectives. Vera Stanhope is a bit heavier on angst than the more suspenseful Avraham Avraham. -- Stephen Ashley
While readers may find a bit more angst in Vera Stanhope than Detective Tully Jarsdel, both complex detective protagonists use all their skills to crack tough cases in these atmospheric police procedural series. -- Stephen Ashley

Publisher's Weekly Review

In Cleeves's captivating third mystery featuring Det. Chief Insp. Vera Stanhope of the Northumberland police (after Telling Tales), Vera and the members of her team look into the murder of teenager Luke Armstrong, who was found strangled in his bathtub. The way Luke's body was laid out, anointed with perfumed oils and surrounded by wild flowers, suggests a certain respect for the victim. A college student is later discovered on a beach, once again with flowers scattered around the corpse. The two murders appear to be related, but Vera and crew will have to do a lot of digging to determine the exact connection between them. All the players-the suspects, police officers, and surviving relatives of the victims-are fully realized individuals. Vera, a reflective middle-aged woman who doesn't suffer fools gladly, is particularly vivid. She drinks her beer straight from the bottle and seldom says no to a drop of whisky. Readers will want to devour the entire series just for the pleasure of spending time in Vera's complex and inviting world. Agent: Sarah Menguc, Sarah Menguc Literary (U.K.).
