Annabel receives a lighter tone and pitch, as do her unmarried cousin and confidant Lady Louisa and friend Lady Valentine, who comes to the lovers' rescue. Landor adds just the right touch of aristocratic stuffiness to Lord Newbury, Annabel's grandparents, and others of the ton. She gets the smart dialogue right every time, whether recounting verbal sparring between lovers, casual but invariably witty conversations, or steamy seduction scenes.
