Description

Hermeneutics is the branch of knowledge that deals with interpretation, a behaviour that is intrinsic to our daily lives. As humans, we decipher the meaning of newspaper articles, books, legal matters, religious texts, political speeches, emails, and even dinner conversations every day . But how is knowledge mediated through these forms? What constitutes the process of interpretation? And how do we draw meaning from the world around us so that we might understand our position in it? In this Very Short Introduction Jens Zimmerman traces the history of hermeneutic theory, setting out its key elements, and demonstrating how they can be applied to a broad range of disciplines: theology; literature; law; and natural and social sciences. Demonstrating the longstanding and wide-ranging necessity of interpretation, Zimmerman reveals its signifiance in our current social and political landscape. This primer on hermeneutics is another fine addition to Oxford's "Very Short Introductions" series. Zimmermann (Trinity Western Univ.) does a masterful job of leading readers--lay as well as academic--through the often arcane and Byzantine world of hermeneutics. The author's writing style is approachable and readable, his knowledge of the subject matter is broad in scope, and his examples are specific. In a brief but adequate introduction to hermeneutics and the history of the subject, Zimmermann establishes a firm foundation. He then delves into both theory and application, touching on the major thinkers and schools that have contributed much to current understanding of hermeneutics. He rounds out the presentation with an informed and interesting discussion of how hermeneutics has impacted the humanities, theology, law, and science. This reviewer especially appreciated the discussion of hermeneutics vis-à-vis the humanities and religion and Zimmermann's discussion of E. D. Hirsch's hermeneutic objectivism. There is much of interest in this slim volume. Summing Up: Highly recommended. Lower-division undergraduates through faculty. --William J. Pankey, William Rainey Harper College
