Description

Read the timeless classic about the beloved Anne Shirley, a red-haired orphan with a fiery spirit, behind the hit Netflix series Anne with an E—now celebrating a hundred years of this children’s favorite. "[Anne is] the dearest and most lovable child in fiction since the immortal Alice." —Mark TwainEleven-year-old Anne Shirley has never known a real home. Since her parents' deaths, she's bounced around to foster homes and orphanages. When she is sent by mistake to live with Matthew and Marilla Cuthbert at the snug white farmhouse called Green Gables, she wants to stay forever. But Anne is not the sturdy boy Matthew and Marilla were expecting. She's a talkative redheaded girl with a fierce temper, who tumbles into one scrape after another. Anne is not like anybody else; she is a girl with an enormous imagination and boundless passion. All she's ever wanted is to belong somewhere. And the longer she stays at Green Gables, the harder it is for anyone to imagine life without her. This special Collector’s Edition includes the original, unabridged text, a specially commissioned biography of L.M. Montgomery, and a map of Prince Edward Island.

School Library Journal Review

Gr 5-8-Anne never fit in at any of the foster homes she was sent to after her parents' deaths. When she is mistakenly sent to the Cuthbert's farmhouse, Green Gables, she is overjoyed. Although the foster parents wanted a boy, this mischievous, talkative, imaginative girl eventually gets under their skin. Kate Burton, an incredible vocal artist, provides superb narration for L. M. Montgomery's classic. She creates an irresistibly vivacious and breathless voice for Anne. She also provides an excellent voice for the repressed and proper Marilla Cuthbert, slowly allowing the woman's increasing affection for her charge to blossom. Shy Matthew Cuthbert is voiced quietly but firmly. Listeners will fall in love with Burton's performance as well as the spunky, exceptional Anne Shirley. A must-have for all libraries-B. Nova Scotia-born children's author Wilson gives us the backstory to a classic, imagining little orphan Anne of Green Gables before she found her new family. Look for the 100th-anniversary edition of L.M. Montgomery's beloved work (ISBN 978-0-399-15478-2. $19.95). (c) Copyright 2010. Library Journals LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Media Source, Inc. Horn Book Review

Illustrated with adequate watercolors, this easy-to-read adaptation of the beloved classic distills some of Anne's most memorable escapades from the novel. In these few bare-boned episodes, the novel's charm is as hard to find as Marilla's missing brooch. The original is a great read aloud for those not ready to read it on their own. (c) Copyright 2010.
